Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary represents people, not just individual projects; more than selling books, they work as their clients’ creative and business partners throughout the entire publishing process. Their goal is to develop and guide talent to its fullest expression across a variety of media–from books, film and television, to audio and electronic formats.
Founded in 1989 by author and academic entrepreneur James Levine, they have grown into a firm of over a dozen people with offices in New York and San Francisco. They work in every category of fiction and non-fiction.
Most of their titles are published by imprints of the major houses, but they have also done business with independent and/or university presses. Because they are aggressively moving their books into electronic formats, they also work with many ebook publishers.
Their strong foreign rights department works internationally with a respected network of co-agents to place their titles with leading foreign publishers, and they are regular participants at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the London Book Fair, and Book Expo America.
They work with top co-agents in Hollywood to represent film and television rights to their books to major studios and production companies, and in some cases, to attach writers, directors, or actors to the project as part of the process. Recent book-to-film deals include Gillian Flynn’s novels — a film adaptation of Gone Girl written by the author was directed by David Fincher (“Fight Club,” “Social Network”) and produced by 20th Century Fox for release in October 2014, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike; Dark Places, starring Oscar-Award winner Charlize Theron, was adapted and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (“Sarah’s Key”) for Hugo Productions for release in 2015; and Sharp Objects was optioned by eOne with Jason Blum of Blumhouse to produce and is currently in development. Previously, author Rosalind Wiseman’s best-selling Queen Bees and Wannabes was optioned and sold as the basis for the movie “Mean Girls,” written by and starring Tina Fey.
